Project Spotlight

In construction, there is no substitute for experience.

When you’ve been working at your craft as long as we have, you develop the skills to overcome unique challenges. Below are a few projects that demonstrate our capability and versatility.

We take pride in working on historic courses – like this 1923 Donald Ross design – especially when they are in the Jacksonville area. We completed major renovations at Timuquana in 1996 and 2015, so it was gratifying to be asked to return for another large-scale project in 2021 under the guidance of architect Bruce Hepner.

With a Champions Tour tournament scheduled for October of that year, we had a strict 5-month timeline for the work. The comprehensive scope involved reconstructing the greens, regrassing fairways, rebuilding tees and installing new drainage, irrigation and cart paths. One of the most interesting aspects of the project was to introduce native areas around the boundaries of the course, blending them back into the existing environment like they had been there for years. We finished the project on time, and helped celebrate a successful an inaugural Furyk and Friends CHAMPIONS TOUR tournament that year.

An historic course designed by Pete Dye, this prestigious layout hosts the PGA TOUR’s prominent RBC Heritage Classic annually. The 18th tee features one of golf’s most iconic views, out over Calibogue Sound with Harbour Town’s famous lighthouse in the background.

In 2015, we completed a major renovation of the course that consisted of stripping the in-play surfaces, restoring the greens contours, and regrassing the entire layout, wall-to-wall. Despite this comprehensive scope, the full renovation was executed in a mere three months, start to finish.

In 2019, under the guidance of golf legend Davis Love III and his design team, we completed a full renovation of this ocean-side course including the rerouting of several golf holes. In addition to a complete reconstruction of all infrastructure, classic design elements inspired by Walter Travis’ original 9-hole course were restored. These included traditional railroad ties, a punchbowl green and the odd chocolate drop. In addition to the adjacent Seaside Course, the Plantation is the host of the PGA TOUR’s annual RSM Classic.

In 2021, we had the privilege to partner with architect Chris Wilczynski to renovate this historic 1916 Tom Bendelow design. This project was particularly demanding – with only 60 days to demolish, rebuild, and grass 18 green complexes.

To succeed, we adhered to the MacCurrach mantra of “Planning the Work, then Working the Plan.” Following considerable pre-project planning with architect, superintendent and Club, 8 tractor trailer loads of equipment were mobilized from Florida. Before Day 1, all drainage pipe was pre-delivered, and thousands of tons of gravel and greensmix were stockpiled on-site. Using multiple crews and supervisors with defined work zones and hole sequences, the project was completed on-schedule and the course reopened when promised.

In 2022, we had the pleasure to renovate the bunkers at yet another historic golf club with an iconic lighthouse. Located on the island of Nantucket, the project offered unique logistical challenges. Working in the off-season, available ‘on-island’ resources were severely limited. The required level of equipment, supplies and material all needed to be penciled out to a high level of precision before it could be mobilized. All items had to be ordered and shipped simultaneously. Delivery to a mainland destination was synchronized so that it could then be mustered and barged over to the island. Material quantities had to be sufficient to complete the project without leaving excess waste. After detailed planning, the project was successfully executed over a period of 10 weeks.
